Dateline: The United States of America.
We're in a hotbed of political debate because so many people care - and have cared - about our country, its past, present and future. Yet on the Fourth of July most cable stations, networks and other media outlets share some common messages: How insightful our founders were, how great this country is, how privileged we are to live here. We each have a responsibility to help move our society forward but we have difficulty in agreeing how best to do it together.
I marvel at each primary and election day. We are sometimes disheartened at the outcome of our vote but never with the peaceful process.

The Third of July. It's hard to fathom that in most places people wait until the Fourth to celebrate. In towns across this great land the Fourth begins with a reading of the Declaration of Independence or at least the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner" Here, uh, I think it's usually late sleep. Don't worry; the patriotic songs and tributes last well into the night of the Third.
God Bless America, left and right, east, west, north, south, midwest and middle. Let's keep the conversation going. Let's turn down the cable news rhetoric and listen to one another. Let's keep this nation great.

Happy Fourth today. Grateful for our independence all year through and grateful to all those who created it, nurtured it and sustain it.
